Water Spider Sun Circle Medallion
Item: BEA-SPIDER
Price: $420.00

This medallion I have done in the shape of a sun circle. The spider design was often carved into stone suncircles and shell gorgets. I have colored the circles in the sun circle with the colors of the four directions to match the circle on her back. The circle on her back has several meanings/interpretations. It is the commonly recognized 4 direction symbol. This symbol is also considered a power symbol for the chief. In the waterspider story where she brings back the fire for the first council fire this circle is the bowl she spun to carry back the coals. It also is a symbol of the council fire with logs to each of the four directions. The fire built in the center of the council and the logs were pushed in as the fire burned.

This necklace was hand beaded and is backed with black leather.    It features  a hand sculpted and hand painted water spider or grandmother spider design inspired by the ancient sun circles it was painted with underglazes before firing.  It is beaded with size13 charlottes and  15 japanese beads.  The cord is woven with the size 11 beads and has color bands corresponding to each of the 4 directions.

Size:  Medallion is 4inches  (100mm) in diameter.   It is on a inch beaded cord.
